1. Engines


This is the perfect place to start for learning how automotive engines work, and the various types of engines that are out there. The first video will give a general overview of everything involved with an engine and how it ultimately powers the wheels.


Now that you know how a basic piston cylinder engine works, let's take a look at how gasoline engines differ from diesel engines.
  

Not all automotive engines operate with a four stroke cycle. Though two-strokes are more common in small engine applications like dirt bikes, atvs, lawnmowers, etc, they can also be found in some cars.


Car engines come in many different forms. The following video provides insight on the naming system used to identify different engine layouts.


Not all engines are piston-cylinder based, however. Mazda has used rotary engines in a few of the cars it has previously made. The workings of a rotary engine are quite different than piston cylinder engines, and require far less moving parts.


There are several important parameters you will hear about when discussing engines. Probably the most common are horsepower and torque. These figures explain the force the engine is capable of creating. The higher these numbers, the more powerful your engine, and more capable it is for high speeds, acceleration, and towing.


Another important parameter when discussing engines is the compression ratio. The greater this ratio, the more efficient the engine will ultimately be. This is a main advantage of diesel engines as they run on very high compression ratios.


Understanding compression ratio is important for understanding what grade fuel a car uses. Gasoline engine cars with high compression ratios will typically use higher octane fuel. The following video helps make things clear:

  5. Great tutorials and video.
    May be it is a silly question, but what causes the crankshaft to rotate and push the piston at the compression cycle? Is it just because of the inertia?

    1. If we're talking about a single cylinder engine, the stored energy of the flywheel (inertia) has enough force to compress the cylinder. With multi-cylinder engines, the flywheel plays the same role, however some of the pistons will be on the power stroke while others are on the compression stroke, which more than makes up for the lost energy due to compression. The answer to your question, put simply, is the inertia of the flywheel.

I'm currently going to school for mechanical engineering and I want to focus on automobile design (hopefully), people usually say I know a lot about cars and come looking to me for help but this just brings it to a whole new level. You explain this stuff extremely well and I really appreciate the videos, keep it up! Just wondering, because I saw you graduated with a degree in ME, what you do now?

  12. I got everything that you said except one small thing. What moves the piston from TDC to BDC for the first time? As i understand, the piston cannot do so of its own accord. So is it the starter motor or something else.

  13. Good work Jason! I am a beginner and this is absolutely the best place i could've started my learning.
    a few questions from the car engines video:
    1. is the spark plug activated by the camshaft? i mean is there a position it reaches during its rotation cycle where it switches it on? or is there a separate mechanism which switches the spark plug on?
    2. what moves(provides motion)to the camshaft which in turn closes and opens the valves.

      2. The camshaft is connected via one of several ways (belt, chain, direct gear linkage) to the crankshaft. Every time the crank shaft rotates, the camshaft rotates 180 degrees.

    I am a student studying towards BSc Electrical Eng however i am a fan of your great videos. On the octane ratings video you said low rating fuels perform like high rating fuels on a mountain (high altitude ie less atmospheric pressure). so my guess is that a flat engine (boxer) is not affected by altitude for different octane rating fuels (since atm pressure acts evenly) am i right ??
