2. Engine Components/Features


One of the most important sub-assemblies of an engine is the valvetrain, which consists of the camshafts which are used to open and close the intake and exhaust valves. There are three main types of valvetrains, as described in this video:


Of course, the engine needs fuel to produce power, which is fed to the cylinders by fuel injectors in most modern cars. Originally, however, fuel was delivered to the cylinders via a carburetor, using pressure differences to extract the fuel. The following two videos go into detail of each topic:



To ignite the fuel, we'll need a spark. This job is accomplished by the ignition system, using spark plugs. This video explains how the charge is created and how the timing is accomplished.


The starting of an engine requires crankshaft to rotate a few times to get things running. This is accomplished through rotating the flywheel using a starter motor. The following video explains the full process:


Aside from starting the vehicle, the flywheel plays a major role in keeping the engine running, and allowing the engine to run smoothly even when torque is applied to the crankshaft in pulses.


Of the thousands of engine power strokes which occur each minute, quite a bit of heat is produced. This heat must be displaced from the engine, and this is the job the radiator and cooling system satisfies.

VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is a form of variable valve timing used by Honda. The idea remains nearly constant, though it is named different for different companies (VVT, MIVEC, etc.). Below is a video on VTEC.


Honda has developed various forms of VTEC, including 3-Stage VTEC, which maximizes fuel economy at low RPM, and maximizes power at high RPM.

Good cooling system plays an important role to the overall performance of any vehicle just as what air conditioners do in every household, this is to prevent any over heating that may occur in the engine that may cause damage to the engine itself or even worse may cause fire.

  4. It is fun to know more about the three main types of valvetrains. Even if you just used a whiteboard to explain all of it I can clearly understand it very well. I suggest that you should write some of the terminologies a bit bigger because I can’t read some of it.

  5. Exerted much effort in drawing all engine parts with a whiteboard and pen! At least everyone's informed how parts are related and how each one helps the other parts in performing well. I think the radiator is the primary part that should be well taken care of. Nobody wants to get stranded in the middle of a desert due to overheat.

  6. I want to ask a question and to verify my logical thinking. So, as the engine RPM increases the ignition device on distributor will rotate with exact same speed as the engine RPM? If so, the device will require solidly build quality to prevent damage prior to high rotation isn't it? Thanks.

  11. I just finished watching the 2 VTEC videos and I'm a little confused about something in the 3 stage VTEC video. You show in the video that low range uses 12 valves whereas mid and high range use 16 valves. For a V8 engine, wouldn't it be either 8 valves or 16? Or am I missing something else that brings some extra valves in somewhere? In any case, I think your videos are great. I just discovered them yesterday and am really enjoying them!

  12. Hey everyone, just finished another great lesson. So essentially speaking, is it possible to increase power (horsepower and/or torque; doesn't matter, just wondering out of curiosity) from getting better stuff like a better-shaped fan to further cool the hot air in the radiator for example? Or maybe allowing more air to passed into the radiator (is this component called the air intake?) Thanks!
